PFAS contamination
Up until 2008, fire-fighting foam containing PFAS/PFOS compounds was used at Roskilde Airport. We acknowledge the major problem this has caused and are contributing our knowledge, experience and solutions to combat the contamination.
The fire brigade at Roskilde Airport has an obligation to practice extinguishing fires, etc., so that they are always ready to intervene if an accident should occur. Before 2011, when the use of PFOS in fire-fighting foam was banned, it was a common ingredient in fire-fighting foam. Like many other places in the world where fire drills have been carried out, fire-fighting foam containing PFOS compounds has therefore also been used at Roskilde Airport. However, we already stopped using it in 2008.
In 2008, we also went a step further and completely stopped the use of fire-fighting foam containing any form of PFAS compounds. It is also legal to use today, as long as it does not contain PFOS/PFOA compounds.
Unfortunately, the previous use of foam with PFOS compounds has been shown to have contaminated the soil in the areas where the fire-fighting foam has been used. We are now working to map and prevent this contamination.
In September 2022, Roskilde Municipality sent Copenhagen Airports A/S an investigation order. This order requires us to conduct pollution investigations at Roskilde Airport of a foam testing site where PFAS contamination has been detected, and a number of spread routes for the contamination. We are now taking action based on this order.
In 2023, a new treatment plant will be put into operation at Roskilde Airport. It cleans contaminated surface water before it is discharged into Skelbækken outside the airport.
